In spite of, or maybe even because of, our long cold winter this year Caerhays had a magnificent display of Magnolias for the Annual Cornwall Garden Society Spring Show over the weekend of 10/11 April.

Retaining the cups which have now been won by the Caerhays team for 5 consecutive years the display set up by Jaimie and the boys was outstanding. One of the judges even remarked that "it is the best vase of magnolias I have ever seen" a fiting and well deserved plaudit for all the work and care that goes into getting the flowers to the show bench.
You can see from the pictures below just how carefully protected they have to be to travel and hopefully arrive in good condition. Once the bloom is selected and cut the actual wrapping of each individual flower is a time consuming and painstaking job with great care being needed not to bruise or damage a single bloom. Transporting them to the showground is the next stage and getting the vases to the actual show bench another step where so many things can go wrong, a slip or a knock can easily ruin hours of work.
All the work was worth it when on Saturday they found that they had once again won (among others) the following awards:-
The Abbis Memorial Trophy for most outstanding vase or growing plant in sections A B C & D
The Treve Holman Memorial Cup for best exhibit in Section B – Magnolias
The George Johnstone Perpetual Trophy – for most points in Section B – Magnolias
Our next show will be at RHS Rosemoor in April.
